The Best French Toast is delicious french toast with hints of cinnamon and vanilla flavor and drenched in maple syrup. Life-in-the-Lofthouse.com

My family loves eating waffles for a cozy Sunday morning breakfast. It’s very rare you’ll see me make pancakes or even French toast for that matter, until now.

A few weekends ago I was watching re-runs of Pioneer Woman’s cooking show. I love that woman. Raise your hand if you do too. I wish I could be friends with her, or at least meet her one day. She is so inspirational, funny, and everything she cooks I want to make immediately. Especially, her French toast.

I’ve only made French toast a couple times in my life, and never been a fan of it. So disappointed in the end result. I think the main problem was using plain old white bread. Yuck. The second problem was the eggs. Homemade French toast has always seemed to ‘eggy’ for me. Double yuck.

That all changed when I tried Ree’s recipe. Her recipe uses real French bread! ( Duh! Who would have thought? Not this blonde. lol ) And second, she only uses egg yolks. I tweaked it just a bit by not using sugar and adding a little cinnamon. The end result was restaurant quality delicious French Toast! It was every bit as good as I dreamed it would be, and was super easy to make. It’s definitely going in our weekend breakfast rotation from now on!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf crusty French Bread
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Toppings:

  • Maple syrup
  • powdered sugar
  • butter

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Slice the French bread into 1/2 inch slices. Set aside. In a large bowl or dish, combine egg yolks, milk, vanilla and cinnamon with a whisk. Dip each slice of French bread into the mixture, coating both sides. Remove from dish and repeat with all bread slices.
  • Swipe butter all over the hot griddle and then add coated bread slices. Cook French toast on each side for 2-3 minutes, or until golden-brown. Watch closely so they don’t burn!
  • Serve French toast immediately with butter, warm syrup and powdered sugar. Enjoy!
