Here in the Lofthouse we go wild over fruit desserts. In the realm of classic fruit treats, few can rival the comforting allure of a well-made peach cobbler. This recipe elevates the traditional approach, blending simplicity with sophistication. My recipe for The Best Peach Cobbler is one of the most heavenly desserts that you might be able to imagine. Everything about it is pure bliss.

This timeless recipe transforms humble ingredients into a mouthwatering masterpiece that’s perfect for any occasion. Picture plump, juicy peaches enveloped in a golden-brown cookie crust, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on your taste buds. Whether you’re using fresh, ripe peaches or opting for the convenience of canned ones, this dessert is a testament to the sweet indulgence of homemade goodness.

THE BEST PEACH COBBLER

It all begins with sliced peaches. While fresh peaches are highly recommended, canned peaches stand as a reliable alternative, ensuring a taste of summer all year round.  The first layer of magic is sprinkled atop the peaches, where 2 tablespoons of sugar work their sweet enchantment. This not only enhances the sweetness of the peaches but also contributes to the creation of a luscious, caramelized syrup as the cobbler bakes.

Now, the batter. In a medium bowl, a blend of sugar, softened butter, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt is meticulously crafted. For an extra touch of warmth, a hint of nutmeg is invited to the party, though this is entirely optional and can be tailored to personal preferences.

The batter, akin to the consistency of cookie dough, comes to life with the addition of a large egg and a splash of vanilla extract. The result is a velvety-smooth concoction that will soon become the golden crown atop the succulent peaches. Carefully placing the batter over the peaches, the cobbler is ushered into the oven, where alchemy occurs. In just 35 to 40 minutes, the crust transforms into a glorious golden brown, forming a tantalizing contrast to the rich, gooey peaches beneath.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups sliced peaches (fresh is best, but canned peaches work great too)
  • 2 Tablespoons + 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • tiny pinch of salt
  • pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish with non-stick spray. Spread sliced peaches out in a single layer in a prepared dish. Sprinkle the tops of peaches with 2 Tablespoons sugar.

In a medium bowl, with an electric hand-mixer, beat 1 cup sugar and softened butter together until combined. Add flour, baking powder, salt (and nutmeg if using). Mix. Then add in egg and vanilla. Continue to beat and mix until just combined. (Batter will be the consistency of cookie dough batter.)

Take chunks of dough and flatten them with your hand. Carefully place batter all over the tops of peaches. It doesn’t have to fully cover the peaches.

Bake in a preheated oven for 36 to 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the oven and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

This recipe ensures that approximately 6 servings are generously provided. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, a cozy dinner with friends, or a festive celebration, the bountiful serving size ensures that everyone can indulge in the rich, fruity goodness of this peach cobbler.

STORING INSTRUCTIONS

After the cobbler has cooled, cover the baking dish securely with foil or transfer any remaining portions to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days, preserving the crisp edges and luscious peach filling. When the craving for a sweet escape strikes again, a brief reheating session in the oven will restore the cobbler to its initial perfection, ready to delight your taste buds once more.

GLUTEN-FREE ADAPTATION

Great news for dessert enthusiasts with gluten sensitivities – adapting this peach cobbler recipe to be gluten-free is a seamless and inclusive process. Substitute the traditional all-purpose flour with a reliable gluten-free alternative, ensuring that everyone at the table, regardless of dietary restrictions, can revel in the delectable flavors of this classic treat. The adaptation preserves the essence of a perfect peach cobbler experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for a diverse range of preferences.

TURN THE BEST INTO THE ABSOLUTE VERY BEST

Elevate the indulgence by exploring delightful side pairings that complement its warm, fruity goodness. A classic choice is to serve it with a scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream or a dollop of airy whipped cream, introducing a cool and creamy element that harmonizes with the flavors of the cobbler. For those who appreciate a touch of contrast, consider presenting the cobbler alongside a scoop of tangy Greek yogurt, adding a refreshing twist to each bite. The versatility of this dessert makes it a delightful centerpiece for a dessert spread, whether it’s a casual family gathering, an intimate dinner, or a festive celebration with friends.

I did not drain the juice and was out if vanilla extract and it was still delicious! I wish there was more but my family ate every bite! Yummy recipe!

    2. I loved the recipe, easy to make, easy instructions. I made it with canned peaches, drained. Came out delicious!

    3. You use the juice to mix in with the peaches you do drain them and keep the juice mix that in and use a little cornstarch to thicken the juice

    4. This is Definitely the best peach cobbler I have ever made I have made a lot as well.
Thanks for a yummy, easy recipe
I have used it with plums and apricots too.
      Many thanks Kay

I would not put the crust on the bottom. You would totally lose the texture that is so wonderful when it browns on top of the cobbler.

  1. I need to try this recipe out! I have always been a cake-mix-cobbler user, with a few other things added. I always thought I just liked my recipe too much to try anything else, but your recipe has convinced me 🙂

      1. I have to say this was delicious. I added a touch of water to the dough to make it easier to handle then dropped little tablespoons of dough distributed over the peaches. Came out perfect! I also used it for an apple cobbler recipe and it was amazing!

Best cobbler ever!! The hardest part is putting on the crust. So, the second time I made it, I used a cookie press with a flat disc to “pipe” the crust on. I’m sure a pastry bag with a wide flat tip would work even better!

I must try this recipe, my mom loves peach cobbler and I really feel like learning this recipe to prepare it for her next tmie she comes and visit. Thanks for sharing! <3

  3. I trusted your comments so, I made 4 at a time because I had an abundance at this time. I added cinnamon ( I was out of nutmeg but will try when I have some ) and couple tbls brown sugar with a reduction of 1 cup white sugar. I have to control my sugar so I don’t become a diabetic. Love your receipe it’s a keeper!

The title of this recipe is correct! I made this delicious cobbler with some ripe, local Porter, Oklahoma peaches. The only changes I made were: I used 3 C. of peaches, then simmered them in 1 C. brown sugar until soft & added 1/3 C. butter before spreading them in the baking dish. I brought it to work & it was devoured before lunch time! GREAT recipe!

    1. This is what I intend to do! I live a few miles away from Porter. So I love going 5 minutes down the road and making cobbler. Porter also has great blackberries. Don’t skip out on those!

      1. peel the peaches by dropping them in boiling water for a minute or so. The peels slide right off.

This is the best and easiest recipe I’ve ever had. I lost my copy several years ago and am so glad you posted this again. I evenmixed it all together and froze it and just pored it in the bowl and it was still delicious. You can sub spend a too although I do still use a small amount of sugar for consistency but it is sooo good like it is. Thanks for the recipe.

    Hi! Holly,

This Peach Cobbler ROCKS! This was exactly what I was looking for in a Peach Cobbler. I substituted a little Lavender Salt, for the salt. I also used the canned peaches in a jar and only 3/4 cup of sugar. Was most excellent!

  7. Can this be frozen? If so, would you cook then freeze or just assemble, then freeze? I’ve been asked to bring cobbler to a family vacation and would love to make in advance, if it will work.

Delicious!!! I tweaked this just a bit. I added 1 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg to my peaches. The crust tastes like a sugar cookie. Can’t wait to share this recipe. Thanks for sharing!

I have baked many cobblers in my years, but this is absolutely delicious!!!!!!! Perfect with ice cream, nice texture to crust, easy to make. Awesome!!!! Will make again. I used fresh, home grown tree ripened peaches!!!! Thanks for sharing

Yes you have to peel the peaches. An easy method to removing the skin is to cover peaches in boiling hot water for about 1 minute, drain hot water, and immediately disburse them in to very cold water for a couple minutes. The peels slide off easily.

This is a keeper cobbler recipe…very delicious! Made this for a small dinner party dessert. I serve the cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream. Everyone loved it!

Do you book the peaches for a a few minutes with the sugar before placing in oven with the crust? To soften them? Or did they come out soft enough without taking this extra step?

  10. I made this last night and it was a hit. I used an 8×8 pan, used a little more fresh peaches and added some berries I’d just picked. Next time I’ll use at least 3 cups peaches. I also decreased the 2 tbls sugar on the peaches I mixed it all be hand, no electric beater. Thanks, we love cobbler!

  11. if you have more peaches is it okay to just double all of the ingredients and be keep the bake time?

  12. Another keeper! SO good!!!!!! Gosh darn it! :)) Only complaint I have is that it wasn’t big enough. LOL! So my question is, could I double this? Would I use a 9×13 pan then and change baking time? I’m getting company next weekend and I NEED to make this! Mmmmm

    Hi Holly,
Made this today for a family get together. I was thrilled at how easy it was to make, and it was REALLY flipping good! I’m keeping this one! Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. Can you make this a day in advance? If so, would you refrigerate it?
Have you ever tried having preparing the peaches and on the side preparing the topping the day before?
I could then throw it together at the last minute and bake??

  15. Made this today after trying several different recipes and I agree with other reviews that it is truly the best!
