The Best Peach Cobbler
The Best Peach Cobbler is a spring and summer dessert made with peaches, topped with a sugar-cookie-style crust that bakes up perfectly.

Here in the Lofthouse we go wild over fruit desserts. In the realm of classic fruit treats, few can rival the comforting allure of a well-made peach cobbler. This recipe elevates the traditional approach, blending simplicity with sophistication. My recipe for The Best Peach Cobbler is one of the most heavenly desserts that you might be able to imagine. Everything about it is pure bliss.
This timeless recipe transforms humble ingredients into a mouthwatering masterpiece that’s perfect for any occasion. Picture plump, juicy peaches enveloped in a golden-brown cookie crust, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on your taste buds. Whether you’re using fresh, ripe peaches or opting for the convenience of canned ones, this dessert is a testament to the sweet indulgence of homemade goodness.
THE BEST PEACH COBBLER
It all begins with sliced peaches. While fresh peaches are highly recommended, canned peaches stand as a reliable alternative, ensuring a taste of summer all year round. The first layer of magic is sprinkled atop the peaches, where 2 tablespoons of sugar work their sweet enchantment. This not only enhances the sweetness of the peaches but also contributes to the creation of a luscious, caramelized syrup as the cobbler bakes.
Now, the batter. In a medium bowl, a blend of sugar, softened butter, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt is meticulously crafted. For an extra touch of warmth, a hint of nutmeg is invited to the party, though this is entirely optional and can be tailored to personal preferences.
The batter, akin to the consistency of cookie dough, comes to life with the addition of a large egg and a splash of vanilla extract. The result is a velvety-smooth concoction that will soon become the golden crown atop the succulent peaches. Carefully placing the batter over the peaches, the cobbler is ushered into the oven, where alchemy occurs. In just 35 to 40 minutes, the crust transforms into a glorious golden brown, forming a tantalizing contrast to the rich, gooey peaches beneath.

INGREDIENTS
- 4 cups sliced peaches (fresh is best, but canned peaches work great too)
- 2 Tablespoons + 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
- 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- tiny pinch of salt
- pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish with non-stick spray. Spread sliced peaches out in a single layer in a prepared dish. Sprinkle the tops of peaches with 2 Tablespoons sugar.
In a medium bowl, with an electric hand-mixer, beat 1 cup sugar and softened butter together until combined. Add flour, baking powder, salt (and nutmeg if using). Mix. Then add in egg and vanilla. Continue to beat and mix until just combined. (Batter will be the consistency of cookie dough batter.)
Take chunks of dough and flatten them with your hand. Carefully place batter all over the tops of peaches. It doesn’t have to fully cover the peaches.
Bake in a preheated oven for 36 to 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the oven and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

SERVINGS
This recipe ensures that approximately 6 servings are generously provided. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, a cozy dinner with friends, or a festive celebration, the bountiful serving size ensures that everyone can indulge in the rich, fruity goodness of this peach cobbler.
STORING INSTRUCTIONS
After the cobbler has cooled, cover the baking dish securely with foil or transfer any remaining portions to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days, preserving the crisp edges and luscious peach filling. When the craving for a sweet escape strikes again, a brief reheating session in the oven will restore the cobbler to its initial perfection, ready to delight your taste buds once more.
GLUTEN-FREE ADAPTATION
Great news for dessert enthusiasts with gluten sensitivities – adapting this peach cobbler recipe to be gluten-free is a seamless and inclusive process. Substitute the traditional all-purpose flour with a reliable gluten-free alternative, ensuring that everyone at the table, regardless of dietary restrictions, can revel in the delectable flavors of this classic treat. The adaptation preserves the essence of a perfect peach cobbler experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for a diverse range of preferences.
TURN THE BEST INTO THE ABSOLUTE VERY BEST
Elevate the indulgence by exploring delightful side pairings that complement its warm, fruity goodness. A classic choice is to serve it with a scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream or a dollop of airy whipped cream, introducing a cool and creamy element that harmonizes with the flavors of the cobbler. For those who appreciate a touch of contrast, consider presenting the cobbler alongside a scoop of tangy Greek yogurt, adding a refreshing twist to each bite. The versatility of this dessert makes it a delightful centerpiece for a dessert spread, whether it’s a casual family gathering, an intimate dinner, or a festive celebration with friends.

Tripled this recipe with the following alterations: 70/30 mix frozen peaches/fresh blackberries, sprinkled nutmeg and cinnamon with the sugar over fruit, added juice of 1/2 large lemon. Reduced sugar in crust by i/3. The result was absolute RAVE reviews! Family said best every, particularly the crust. High praise indeed from this discriminating group. Demand repeat performance for Easter.
I can’t wait to make this! I have a question can you make this a day before and place in frig and bake the next day?? Will hat work??
Can I substitute flour with all purpose baking mix?
Great recipe! I used canned peaches and it was delicious. Second time around, I used apples instead of peaches and this makes for a wonderful apple cobbler as well. I added cinnamon and nutmeg along with the sugar on the apples.
I only have one 15 oz can of peaches, is that enough?
I don’t think that will be enough peaches. You need about 3 to 4 cups of peaches for this recipe.
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I made it this weekend and it was truly the BEST….the crust is just like a sugar cookie. Everyone loved it so much that I made it a 2nd time in the same weekend. The 2nd time I tried adding more peaches, but it got too watery. I used fresh peaches, so I think in the future I’ll stick to the original recipe.
First off, I never EVER comment on stuff like this, but you are dead on so I had to this once. WHEN I say dead on, I mean everybody says their recipe is “the best ever ________” but this one really is. This cobbler is amazing, outstanding and most definitely THE best ever. I always found the pancake-like batter in most peach cobbler recipe to be too soft and doughy. Not an issue with this cobbler though lol. This topping is a light crispy shortbread butter cookie and it is out of this world. Thank you for this phenomenal dish and I strongly encourage anyone reading this to give it a try as well….you will be so happy you did lol. HAPPY BAKING!!
Wow! So pretty and no doubt fabulously delicious 🙂 Can’t wait for peach season!
This IS THE BEST peach cobbler, hands down! I’ve made it 4 times and each time I’ve had to TRIPLE the recipe so that everyone can get just 1 serving, and this for less than 15 eaters! Love this recipe and it’s one of my go-to’s. Thank You!

Oh my gosh…. this is absolutely the best peach cobbler I’ve had or made in my life. I have tried many different recipes looking for something like this! It is like a sugar cookie crust, it is sooo freaking good! Before I put the batter on top of the peaches I mixed some softened butter with brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkled that over the peaches instead of the 2 Tbsp of sugar. Thank you for the recipe, I will never use a different one!
I made this today, and it was so good! Thank you for the awesome, simple recipe. Currently a Peace Corps volunteer in the Peruvian Andes and was a bit worried about the altitude, but I just added half a cup more of flour and it turned out perfect. My host family loved it, too.
Thanks for the high altitude tip. I live at 7500ft in colorado and have yet to make peach cobbler successfully. Will be trying this trick tonight
GREAT recipe! I wanted to bring peach cobbler to a party today and I found 2 seemingly good recipes online – this one and another. I couldn’t decide which one to use, so I made both: a cobbler-off! This recipe was the winner by far!
I used fresh peaches with skins off. I also added a little cinnamon in addition to the nutmeg, and didn’t have vanilla extract, so I left that out. The dough seemed a bit dry so I added a bit of peach juice (left over from canned peaches, used for the other cobbler). I will definitely make this again. Thanks for the great recipe!
WOW iis all my husband said,
I didnt try it your way but I did make this recipe with 5 or 6 ingredient changes and it was delicious!
JUST KIDDING… I made this recipe as is and it was THE BEST! EVER! PERIOD!
Just tried this recipe and yummm! Delicious, boyfriend thought it was to die for, although I did use less sugar and it was still very sweet- but I guess that’s more of a personal preference. Nonetheless, still absolutely yummy!
This indeed was the best peach cobbler.
So glad I found this again. Saving to bookmarks because I just spent the last hour searching for your recipe. I made it last month and I’ve been dreaming of having it again.
5 STAR recipe/having technical difficulties getting it to show that way
Holly this recipe is out of this world delicious!!! I made it and agree this was the BEST peach cobbler I’ve had in my life. I can’t thank you enough for sharing. I actually shared this on the Nextdoor app with over a 100 neighbors. I normally don’t post recipes but this one is TOO GOOD to miss out on
Thank you
Best cobbler recipe EVER! I don’t normally like the more biscuit dough recipes and I never feel like those bake the dough all the way through.
I had found your recipe and made it and was so delish! (Actually ended up doubling recipe and making 3!)
Then next time I went to make it your website didn’t pop up when googling peach cobbler so I tried different searches until FINALLY I found your site again! I will be saving this now on.
I did try substituting coconut sugar and whole wheat flour on one and even hubby liked it.
I do less sugar than recipe calls for but ripe peaches make up for it!
I had to leave a comment telling you how amazing I think this recipe is. I came across this after googling cobbler recipes and I was sold on this one when I seen it had a sugar cookie type of crust. But I had no idea how delicious it really is. I will never use another cobbler recipe now that I’ve found this one. And I’m gonna recommend it to anyone looking to make an amazing cobbler. Though I’m tempted to keep it all to myself. Lol yes! It is that good. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This was amazing! I was looking for a cobbler recipe that didn’t involve cake mix, and wow, this was fantastic! I chunked my peaches up, and last time I made this I sliced up a pound of strawberries and mixed it with 2 small peaches cut into chunks. I also added a generous shake of cardamom to the fruit mix because cardamon and peaches go together so beautifully. So, so yummy!
We picked apples today and I wanted a dessert. I peeled, cored and chopped them. This was a peach recipe and I also wanted that! So I dug for a couple frozen peaches and threw those around the apples. Then…it still wasn’t enough fruit. So, I moved all the apples and peaches to one side and added frozen mixed berries to one side of pan.
I added a little milk to the batter. This recipe is my fave already. And I will make it again and again with any fruit and without adding milk. The milk made it a little like cake.OMG. some of the berry juice ended up on the apple. Holy cow!
This recipe is a hit. I have a peach tree and I’ve been looking for a great peach recipe. This was fantastic! I’ve made it three times this week for events and it goes fast!
This looks delicious! In the South it’s all about the crust. Could I double the crust recipe, bake it; then add the remainder of the recipe as directed? That way I have a bottom crust and a TOP one.
I love the crust on this recipe. Super easy and perfect texture. I made the peach filling into my own. Used fresh peaches. Skinned them. Added brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg. I’m also using this crust for my Apple filling with added ingredients as well. Sliced apples very thin. Came out WONDERFUL. Thank you!
My Grandmother made this when I was a kid;
About 70 years ago. Old German recipe which she got from her mother. DELICIOUS with just about any fruit!
