Ingredients
- 2 packages (1 ounce, each) dry onion soup mix
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 2 pounds beef stew meat, or a boneless beef roast, cut in 1-inch pieces
- 5 medium potatoes peeled and diced
- 2 to 3 cups baby carrots
- 1 small yellow onion chopped
- 2 cans (10 ounces, each) cream of celery soup
- 1 cup ketchup *(you can substitute tomato sauce if you don't like ketchup)
Instructions
- In a large plastic bag, combine the dry onion soup mix and paprika. Add in meat and shake the bag to coat meat with the seasonings. (You may have to do that step in two batches, for all the meat to fit)
- Once meat is coated, spread out evenly into a greased 7 quart crock pot. Top meat evenly with the diced potatoes, carrots and onion.
- Mix the cream of celery soup and ketchup in a small bowl. Pour mixture over the meat and vegetables.
- Cover crock pot with lid. Cook on low heat for 7 to 8 hours or until meat is cooked through and vegetables are tender. Stir to combine everything then serve.

I have this cooking in my slow cooker right now! I substituted tomato sauce for the ketchup based off of reviews and me not loving ketchup! I can’t wait to try this!
I’m trying this recipe right now! It looked so easy and it really was! I didn’t have baby carrots so I used chopped regular carrots and I don’t like potatoes so I substituted turnips (mama’s secret to get me to eat stew) . Hope it comes out good!
I made this exactly how the recipe states. The only thing I did different was cook on high for 4 hours because I started at 1 and didn’t have time to leave on low for 8 hours. It came out so incredibly good!! Don’t change anything! I will make this again!
I cooked this recipe is, and it was great. Why are so many people complaining about “too many ingredients”? Must be advocates of franks hot sauce/HP sauce to flavor their bland foods
Hi! I have made this recipe a few times and love it! I am wondering, have you have made it in an instant pot yet? How long do you think it should cook in an instant pot? Thank you!
I haven’t tried it in the instant pot yet. But when I do I will post about it 🙂
I have made this several times now! I always toss everything in to the slow cooker and stir…only because i always forget to do the first step with the beef haha
It definitely is not a healthy stew but sure is delicious!
Thank you for the recipe!!
After reading all of the comments I did 1.5 packets of onion soup mix, 1/2 cup of ketchup and added 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce on top once I assembled everything in the crockpot. Everyone loved it!!!! It was delicious!!! This will definitely be a staple in my house!
Yay! Glad it was a hit for you too, Courtney. We just love it!
I make this every week! It’s so good and easy to make. The only difference is I only use half cup of ketchup. Perfect for cooler days!
A little too ketchupy, would definitely try with tomato soup when I make it again.
Frozen or thawed meat?
Thawed!
I’m just getting ready to make this but realized I only got one can of cream of celery soup. I can’t get to the store to get another one do you have any suggestions what I can use for the second can of soup?
Any other cream of soup would work! Chicken, mushroom, etc. If you don’t have any of those you can still make the recipe, the sauce just won’t be as thick. Hope this helps!
Made this today for my men’s group meeting tonight. Made it straight by recipe but added crushed red pepper for a little heat – stew was amazing, none left!
Just the recipe I was looking for!! We ran out of gas in our house this weekend – the only thing we’ve got to cook with is the slow cooker. Great winter recipe.

I have made this many times. I have used cream of mushroom and cream of celery. The soups and ketchup make a wonderful gravy! Tonight I made it with venison instead of beef. So good. Thanks for such a great recipe!

Thank you For sharing tHis!!!
Can you cook on high?
Hi Brittany! You could cook it on high for about 4 to 5 hours (depends on the crock pot. They all heat differently.) But I do not personally suggest it. I have cooked it on high recently and the bottom was a little over done and my carrots werent cooked enough.
I did enjoy this recipe but please let me confirm that it does taste like ketchup. I never make new RECIPES without thoroughly searching all options and comparing The reviews, otherwise I’m better off sticking to my own recipes. I decided to try this one and found that the ketchup debate left ME at 50/50 so I went with the recommendation of less ketchup. I used half the ketchup the recipe CALLs FOr and replaced it with a beef stock…. all I can taste is ketchup… I can understand that if you’re a ketchup lover, cook with it often, or love a TANGY-sweet stew, that this recipe is great but it is not for me. Other THan the ketchup flavor, it really is a good recipe THEREFORE, I only leave this comment for people like Me. Best regards!
I made this today! I did alter it slightly… I only added 1 bag of the onion soup and I put 1 cup of water into it as well. It still came out super thick, so we ended up eating it over rice. So just keep that in mind if you are looking for a thinner, soupy beef stew. But, the flavor was all there and super delicious!!!
I will be making this to night .
